Pictures For Samantha

Sam is an old friend of mine. Her parents have been friends with my parents practically as long as I can remember. She currently travels and performs throughout the country as a dancer. Needless to say I am extremely jealous of all the fun and interesting places she's been to. Anyway, she was recently home visiting her parents in between gigs and I offered to shoot some updated headshots for her. We had a great time and got some great images as a result. I am definitely looking forward to the next time she is in town.

Pictures with Alvaro

An old friend of mine stopped by last weekend. I have known Alvaro since junior high but haven't had a chance to see him in quite a while. Our schedules just never seem to match up anymore. We had a great time just hanging out and catching up and he was even gracious enough to pose for a few pictures while he was over. The results are below.

IR Self Portraits

The local camera club I belong to is having a summer assignment right now. The theme for August is self portraits with each week having a different theme. This week it's s standard self portrait. Of course I don't like doing anything "standard"...

So for this week I did my self portrait in infra red which can be a little tricky. It is very easy to make people look a little weird when shooting in this format. The easiest solution for this is to make the image B&W and just ignore all the funky colors you can get with infra red. That's what I did for this one although I almost submitted the color version. It was a tough call.

Playing With Available Light

I decided to lay down the flash for a while and spend some time becoming better acquainted with using available light. And Sophie made the perfect victim subject.

Seattle

Long, long time since I last posted here but I plan on changing that. On a lighter note I just recently got back from a short trip to Seattle. Went out for work but still got to see some of the sites, relax a little, and of course take some pictures.

Hurricane Ridge - Olympic National Park, WA

New house? Check. New basement studio setup and operational? Check. New victims to torment in front of the camera? Oh yes...

Pick of the Week: French Creek State Park

It's been a crazy busy week. I am moving up near Phoenixvlle this weekend so most of my time has been spent watching empty boxes fill up and then moving them from point A to point B. However, I was still able to find some spare time and go out shooting before work on Wed but that's about all the camera time I have gotten this week. Hopefully I can return to shooting more once I move in and get settled.

Gear: D70s modified for IR w/ Nikon 16-85 and a 6-stop ND filter
Lighting: Available light
PS: It's an IR picture so there may or may not have been some PS involved. =P

Shofuso: Japan On $6 A Day

Philadelphia's Fairmount Park has a lot going for it photographically. But If you ever visit the horticulture center there than be sure to walk around back and explore a small piece of Japan that is tucked away behind the main building.

Shofuso is a really neat place to visit if you are ever looking for someplace a little different to take pictures in the Philadelphia area. Even if you aren't going to take pictures the area is extremely peaceful and relaxing and would be a perfect way to destress after a long work week. The charm of this place hits you virtually as soon as you walk through the main gate. It's like stepping into one of those travel guides forJapan and the caretakers do a great job at keeping the illusion alive.
Easily the best part of visiting Shofuso is how quickly you forget your proximity to a major city. No noise pollution, no skyscrapers blotting out the sky, and an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility are all used to their greatest potential to make
Shofuso a very charming place to visit.

And a few IR pictures as well for good measure...

Pick of the Week: Fencing Lessons

Equipment: D300 w/ Nikon 16-85; 1 SB800
Lighting: SB800 with 1/8 CTO gel in white shoot thru umbrella camera left.
PS: Even though the ceiling lights in the background were turned off I had to burn down the background to remove some distractions.

Changing Things Up A Bit

I've decided to change things up a bit.

Instead of only posting pictures in this blog I will be posting articles as well. I think the new format will be better suited for my website than a straight photo blog. If you are still itching for photo goodness 3 times a week than may I recommend my other photo blog Clocks for Seeing. It currently is home to a variety of IR pictures but I am sure will contain a more varied assortment of images as it grows.
